CHILDREN’S FUTURES NAMES NEW BOARD MEMBERS

Trenton, N.J., Oct. 9, 2009 —  Children’s Futures (www.childrensfutures.org),   a nonprofit organization that works city wide in Trenton, N.J., to improve child health and development outcomes, has named three new board members.  CF welcomes Caroline Purnell Tompkins, Irving Bradley, Jr., and the Rev. Toby D. Sanders.

“We are grateful that these three distinguished professionals have agreed to join our work on behalf of children and families throughout Trenton,” said Children’s Futures’ Board Chair Kendell Sprott, M.D., J.D., who is also Acting Chair of Pediatrics and Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ).

Caroline Purnell Tompkins is an admissions officer at Thomas Edison State College, an adjunct professor of French at Mercer County Community College and a part-time staff member in the Development/Audience Services department at McCarter Theatre in Princeton.   A member of Leadership Trenton Alumni Association, Ms. Tompkins also serves on the boards of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Mercer and the National Society of Colonial Dames of America in the State of New Jersey.  In addition, she is a community volunteer for Princeton Community Works, UIH Family Partners and past chair of the June Fete annual fundraiser for the University Medical Center at Princeton.  She earned a bachelor’s degree in French at Hollins College in Roanoke, Va., and a master’s degree in Education from Rider University.

Irving Bradley, Jr. has served as Police Director of Trenton since 2008.  Prior to that time he was Trenton’s Director of Communications.  Director Bradley previously served as the Chief of Police in Newark as part of a 20-year career that took him through the ranks of patrolman, investigator, and police management executive.  In his role as Trenton’s Police Director, he has worked closely with Children’s Futures to ensure that children who witness domestic abuse are provided the support they need to reduce the impact of the trauma they experienced.  Director Bradley graduated from Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C., with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Behavioral Science.

Rev. Toby D. Sanders is Pastor and President of Trenton’s Beloved Community Church.  He is also a teacher and a social activist for economic and educational justice and faith-based community development.  As a Christian education specialist and advocate, he works on behalf of families and children who face the severest challenges in society.  The Rev. Sanders is an honors graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta, Ga., and holds a Master’s of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary.  He is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Princeton University where he was awarded the prestigious President’s Fellowship Award.

Children’s Futures Inc. (CF) is a nationally recognized, Trenton-based non-profit organization created to improve health and developmental outcomes for children.  As a major catalyst for change, CF also advocates for important policy initiatives to improve maternal and child health; convenes local stakeholders to model best practices on early childhood development; provides technical assistance and training for service providers; and serves as a clearinghouse of objective child health information.  CF directs a collaboration of health, social service and educational institutions that work together to implement innovative approaches for improving child health and development.  CF began in 2001 with support that continues from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), the nation’s largest philanthropy devoted exclusively to improving the health and health care of all Americans.  CF is part of RWJF’s Vulnerable Populations Portfolio, which is dedicated to examining the critical relationships between health, and where and how people live, work, learn and play.  For more information about Children’s Futures, please visit www.childrensfutures.org.
